Semifinalists North Europe

Ketevan Akubardia

Tiblisi, Georgia

I have a Bachelor’s degree from Tbilisi State Academy of Arts. I have been developing myself as a designer for the past 10 years by creating fashion design items. My work has been featured in startup and design markets, as well as fashion weeks, design markets.

I have also taken part in various design-projects, including those organized by Enterprise Georgia. Last year, I was invited to an international multi-brand platform CUBE SHOWROOM FW20, which is part of the Paris Fashion Week.
I specialize in making leather products and have launched my own brand – IDEAS Q.A. Currently, my startup products include handmade accessories all of which are unique through an individual approach – every single item is processed, cut and painted by hand.

Presentation and video

Time makes leather beautiful and discovering my grandmother’s well-worn old wallet made me realize this. Inspired by her fashion item, I set out to integrate the rugged aesthetic into my work.
Soon, I realized that nothing is perfect or unchanged. Beauty lies in everyday items that undermine this.
My work is honoring this simple truth and breaks the boundaries of traditional form while defying gender stereotypes in the fashion industry. IDEAS Q.A. products are made to reflect the character of those who own it. Rather than being trendy or ultra-modern, my work therefore is a means of self-expression.
Materials used: Leather, metal items.

The concept of CHOLIJA is circling around sustainability, slow fashion, thoughtfulness, and empathy. All garments are handmade and limited edition to maintain authenticity and uniqueness. Also, many accessories are made from recycled/residues fabrics relying on ZERO WASTE philosophy.

My small brand’s slogan is “I want your ugly” – main source of inspiration is people, their lives, and their experiences. Most of CHOLIJA’s clothing collections are made to point out certain problems we have to face and normalizing them, for example – body dysmorphia, depression, feelings of shame and social anxiety, etc. By doing that I am trying to spread awareness, give a little hope, and most importantly – make them believe in themselves and using this power for change!

I strongly believe that style does not follow any trends so my mission is to create timeless products for any occasion. Clothing can be a statement – so why don’t we make it ethical and powerful?

Presentation and video

In today’s society the need to meet ever growing beauty ideals is more prevalent than ever.
Imagined body imperfections are making people feel insecure which is greatly affecting their lives,
causing constant discomfort and even leading to body dysmorphia. The collection will showcase this
phenomenon by making various changes to the standard forms of clothing – changes in size of a
different body parts. Clothes depict an oasis of the distorted mirror – the combination of different
materials in one product, asymmetry, dominates the motives of repetitive details. The main goal of
this work is to create a fashion collection that would attempt to dive deep into the psyche of a modern
person and try to bring to light problems that obsession over ones looks can cause. Combining it with
previously drawn concept arts I was able to create a clothing collection that would distort the image
of a person wearing it, making them look angry and tired.

Recycled fabrics are used in few pieces.

Illustrations made by hand and edited few details digitally.

It was a continuous process more than one particular moment. I was a very calm and thoughtful child and was the happiest sitting alone in my room and drawing lines. And only lines. They fascinated me in a way that they form the basis of any shape and you have limitless opportunities to create.Through the years I started to be interested not only in drawing but also in fashion. Building the understanding of the complex interaction between a person’s conscious and if not more unconscious cognitive processes and the fashion they wear reflecting more of themselves than most would be expecting was essential for my fascination. I ended up being driven by the high impact and responsability fashion has on an individual as well as on society. By the beauty of diversity.

Presentation and video

Her process is in motion; she desperately reaches for love, then hides from it, then plays around. She is trying to interrupt the love with her own darkness — sometimes her darkness is interrupted by love. The red light changes shape and appearance until it starts to blend with the white light and reaches stability. She now loves herself and allows vulnerability to be part of her.
